Club Magazine:
2010 is the 50th Anniversary of the Sixty Motor Club and the
90th Anniversary of the Worcestershire Motor Club so we
thought it would be fitting to celebrate this remarkable milestone
with a special dinner and awards presentation. The Committee has agreed to subsidise the event for all
Club members so that you only need pay £10 for this
three course gala meal. (£15 for non-members).
Club Vice-
President Julian Gadd has secured the use of Boughton Golf Club
in Bransford Road. The menu will be Tomato & Basil soup,
Chicken & Brie with seasonal vegetables, Profiteroles, Coffee or
tea. (There will be a vegetarian option if you let us know). The founding Secretary of the Sixty Motor Club, Ken
Burston, has agreed to come, and it is hoped that some
other “lapsed” members may be encouraged to support the event. Tickets are available from Dood Pearce, Arron, Ross Road,
Newent, Glos, GL18 1BE, Tel 01531 821398 (Cheques
payable to D A Pearce please).
If you have won an award, or even if you haven’t, this will
be a piece of Motor Club history you will not want to miss.
As part of the on-going celebrations our President, Martin
Bowcott, is organising a re-enactment of the very first
Worcestershire Motor Club rally held in 1920. More about that
later

SIXTY & WORCS MOTOR CLUB CELEBRATE
May 2010 is a double birthday for the Sixty & Worcestershire Motor
Club - the “final evolution” being formed in 1960 (June 1st) after a
marriage of several local companies motoring sections and the
progeny of the Worcester and District Motor Cycle Club (April
1920) , therefore making the current club both 50 and 90 yrs old !
It is wonderful to think that a like - minded bunch of motoring
enthusiasts have survived everything the last 90 years have thrown at
them , fuel rationing , wars , foot and mouth restrictions , green issues
etc., to still be enjoying all the different forms of motoring and
motorsport available today.
The club is organising a week of special events at the end of May to
celebrate its double , there will be an Autosolo, nr Pershore, ( a timed
to the second driving test ) for members only (sorry !) , a motoring /
general knowledge quiz at the clubs H.Q.
The Huntsman Inn, Kempsey, and finally on Sunday 30th May, a rerun
of very first event ever organised by the club back in May 1920, to
be known as 9050 Day.
That event was held over a defined route around North Worcs and
Sth Salop finishing some 50 miles later in Hallow , with a natter &
noggin then a bite to eat . The original run lasted all day , remember
the roads were not quite as they are today , but 2010 run will only
take about 3 hrs , and is open to all club members , ex club members
, retired members and future members - it will be entirely social with
prizes only for 1920`S OR 1960`s fancy dress, if you are brave
enough !
More detail will be available soon from the Club President via his
E mail acornprime@aol.com , via the clubs own website and the
club Mag.

Alastairs Autotest 26th July 2009
Alastairs Autotest was a nail biting competition with the winner being decided
by just 1.4 seconds. Ten tests were set up each being run twice with only the best time
to count.
Matt Pearce borrowed Alastair Moffatt’s “Stunt Drive” Nova but had to let the
tyres down before the start. 70 p.s.i. seemed a bit hard ! He set the fastest time on test
1 just 0.3 secs quicker than Ben Williams in his Fiesta. In the big car class Andy
Oakes was quickest on the first run in his diesel Escort Mk III, 2.4 secs further adrift,
but was then pipped by 0.1 secs by Doug Morgan, driving Dood’s Sprite.
Test 2 saw Ben Williams take the lead by beating Matt by 1.2 secs. The battle was
on. By half time Ben had pulled out a lead of 3.5 secs and Dean George was leading
class B by 5.9 secs in his 2 litre Astra, from Doug Morgan.
The father and son team of Geoff and Andy Wooldridge was being resolved in
favour of the younger driver with Geoff complaining that the diagrams were too small
to see without his reading glasses. (It’s sad being a pensioner!). Edd Lloyd had
persuaded Lyndon Churchfield to let him use his Ford Ka and then proceeded to beat
him. Frank Burton started well in the Astra but then had a series of wrong tests and
decided to retire. Russell Carson-Brown was struggling with lack of grip in his Escort
on the wet grass which got progressively worse when it started to rain with two tests
still to go.
Andy Taylor was having a private battle with Andy Wooldridge, both driving the
Club Polo, and after 8 tests there was only 1.1 secs between them.
The last two tests were held in the rain. Test 9 was simple enough with a square
box that had to be driven into forwards and then out forwards. Fortune favoured the
brave who handbraked it round without stopping. Matt Pearce was fastest on 19.2 secs
pulling back 1.2 secs on Ben.
The final test was a series of 5 gates that had to be driven through twice in any
order and in any direction. Ben was quickest just 0.2 secs up on Matt.
The final results couldn’t have been closer with Ben winning by just 1.4 secs from
Matt. Both had five fastest times each. They were in a class of their own over 45 secs
clear of Dean George who was 3rd overall and won class B. Edd Lloyd took the Novice
award by 3.6 secs from Doug Morgan.
Thanks must go to Bill Moffatt for allowing us to use the field, and to all the
marshalls. Also to Frank Burton who brought along a Bar-B-Q and some food.
An excellent days competition.

Ross Traders Historic Road Rally 2009
Start Ross on Wye, Herefordshire
Saturday 11th July 2009
This was the first time that the ATR team had been out this year, and it was to
be an event using Pete’s MG Midget this being the only historic vehicle in our
armourmemtum.
Preparation is always essential, and so when Pete (Doddy) was consistently
complaining of plugs 3 and 4 coking up, there was obviously something amiss.
The car was running rich so some serious work on the carburettors was
required. As it proved, the 2nd carb serving cylinders 3 and 4 was not
operating correctly. We knew this when having balanced the SU carbs, it still
ran like a bag of nails.
Now, at this point, I want all you readers to guess the cure for this and you get
a prize if you know what it is!!!! I’ll even give you a clue, in that we observed
the choke piston which opens and allows air in was not opening properly. Now all the mechanics will be saying, oh yes it’s a bent needle, or the oil damper
lacks oil, or it’s the wrong oil……….. Nope, the cure is Brasso.
A small amount of corrosion on the chromed part of the piston mechanism
when cleaned off with BRASSO, allows the piston open properly and not stick
shut or halfway. So, now you know, all you historic chaps always carry a tin
of Brasso as part of your service essentials!!!
Now we had virtually balanced carbs, but time was late, and getting the fuel
mixture right properly would have to wait
This event is local, and scrutineering is very civilised, being at the Royal Oak public House, Much Marcle on Friday evening. There were loads of cars, as they had a full entry of 60 cars, ranging from a classic 911 Porsche, Citroen DX, a number of beautiful TR3,4,5,6s, a sunbeam Alpine, Austin Riley, and a smattering of classic Minis and Midgets. (well worth a visit if you like historic /classic vehicles)The only 60 and Worcs. competitors were us, as Matt and Dood were in the Isle of Man.
The start as always started at the cattle auctions, Ross on Wye with an
auto-solo style test. May God forgive me, but I managed to direct Pete
through one gate in the wrong direction- WRONG test. How stupid is that. In
mitigation, I was worked up over the variable speeds and times for the 1st
regularity section, which proved to have a tricky herring bone in it. (It took 6
goes to get it right, and next time I’ll use a magnifying glass to make sure I
don’t miss an elusive junction! Time had run out, and we were on the start
line for the test, and I hadn’t looked at the test diagram properly.
That over, and cursing myself for an idiot, we went out to the 1st regularity
which used the lanes west of Ross towards Wormelow, and this went quite
well with no mistakes. Next was 3 more tests at Whitfield Estate. Then came
regularity 2 using the lanes down towards Abergaveney. 2/3 of the way
through, the engine started to get hot and make some seriously nasty noises.
We had lost shockingly 2+pints of oil from the start, and this was quickly
replaced. It still sounded awful, and had lost power. We had marked blow
back through the second carburettor, which signalled, we think a burnt or
blown valve – GAME OVER.
There was nothing to be done, but to retire, let the closing car know, and try
to get home.
In all a rather disappointing day, but ‘that’s rallying’
We hope for better luck next year!!

ATR Car Trial 2009
Belt Wheel Smallholding Lyne Down, near Much Marcle
Sunday 7th June 2009
Supplementary Regulations
Sixty and Worcestershire Motor Club
This was the first round of the 2009 60 and Worcs. MC off road championship, and with our rather unpredictable becoming predictable June weather, it was debatable whether it was going to happen. The weather on Friday and Saturday prior to the event was very wet, and ground became sodden. Certainly Ben, Pete and I all got rather damp laying out the trials on Saturday. That day started with me throwing away the previous designed trials, as they would be impossible with the new ground conditions and a new set were made based on the lower slopes of the field.
Fortunately, with good sloping ground, and that the field had recently been cut and left a thick protective layer of grass which gave good grip for the competitors, the event was a ‘go’. The tests were put out and tested with the club Polo, so we knew they worked and were achievable. The only doubt that remained was the weather, and whether they would prove too hard or too easy depending on the conditions.
On a grey Sunday morning, 8 competitors arrived to undertake 20 tests during the day. As luck would have it the day improved, and became quite sunny later on with the upper slopes of the field becoming quite dry in the end.
After a quick scrutineering and reducing tyre pressures, test 1 was cleaned by all but 2, and the competitors were relaxing, deciding that the day was going to be enjoyable after all. To my surprise all cleaned test 2, even the new boys and girls on the block. Ruby Williams, who initially “didn’t want to look a fool” was beginning to look in fact rather good, and proceeded to clean the next 8 tests. The group learned quite rapidly that slow and steady, and thereby not tearing up the ground would give a clean run. Occasional mistakes were made with too aggressive use of the throttle or hitting an occasional post. Nigel Hall in Frank’s remarkable petrol Seat showed the way home with a clean run for all 10 tests. Russell Carson Brown was not to be outdone and showed similar form in his Escort Diesel. Andy and Geoff Woolridge were having their own battle to see who would be dominant in the father son stakes!
An early lunch halted proceedings, with hot drinks and a good barbecue which was provided courtesy of Frank Burton and ATR. The only down side was a complaint about the lack of cold beer! Meanwhile the remaining 10 tests were ‘toughened up a bit’ as the land was drying rapidly with the sun and wind, and there were too many cleaned tests (the officials’ opinion). However, the competitors were up to the challenge, and two tests were cleaned by all in the afternoon. Nigel Hall remained confident in the tests, but picked up 16 points, only to be overhauled on test 14 by Russell Carson-Brown, who proved to be the eventual winner of the day.
All the competitors gave a creditable performance, and the margin between them all was small, so positions were won and lost on a couple of good or bad tests. With the weather being so good by 16:00 hours, it was decided to give them the opportunity to try 4 new challenging tests to run on the upper slopes, for a small independent prize. No-one was able to clean these, but gave the feel for realyl demanding trials, and was won by Ruby Williams in her Escort diesel.
Results:
1st overall Russell Carson Brown Escort Diesel
2nd O/A and 1st in class A petrol Nigel Hall Seat Ibiza
3rd O/A and 1st. class B diesel Ruby Williams Escort Diesel
2nd class A Anthony Webb Seat Ibiza
2nd class B Nigel Graham Escort diesel Turbo
With many thanks to:
The Marshals – Martin Bowcott, Jeremy Hancocks, Pete Dodschun, Ben Williams, and Diane Taylor
Frank Burton- for supplying the barbecue food & barbecue
Ben Williams – for bringing his large tractor to complete the ground preparation.
Would not have been a good event without you guys, thank you !!!!

Awards Night 6th March 2009
What an excellent social event this years awards night was. 40 tickets
were sold so the Railway Inn was buzzing, and a few people received
awards who were not expecting them.
The Chairman Pete Wood gave a short review of the events we had
put on over the last year and thanked the organisers, especially those who
had rescued the Greenleaves Rally. Despite the economic downturn he
expressed his optimism for the next twelve months, in particular the
Woodpecker Rally which will be part of the National Championship this
year, for the first time.
Then came the presentation of the awards. The star of the evening
was Ben Williams who collected four trophies, one of which he was
surprised to win. The Road Rally Drivers Championship was won by
Frank Burton for the first time after many years of rallying.
So many people competed in the Off-Road Championship that we
were able to present awards down to 5th place. Laura Morgan won the
Ladies Championship for the 3rd year in a row, and in all that time she has
only used her own car once!
Kevin Bowcott won the Stage Co-Drivers Award as well as the
Ceredigion Cup but he was conspicuous by his absence. At the last
minute he managed to get a ride on the Malcolm Wilson Stages Rally and
was being scrutineered in Cockermouth at the time!
Andy Taylor struggled in on his crutches having recently undergone
a hip operation, but the most surprised person in the room was Roger
Allen who was awarded the All-Brakes Trophy for services to the Club.
A Display of Old Woodpecker photos and a picture quiz of old Motor
Club photos also created a talking point. Cliff and Hazel Wright were
probably attending their last Motor Club Awards Night as they are off to
live in France in a few weeks time. (Sounds like a good stopping off
point when heading for the Med!)
If the event gets any more popular we might have to find a bigger
venue. Congratulations to all the award winners:-

Event report form
Event and Date...The Eagle 5/6th. April 2009
Type of event .Road Rally. Car 17 .
Narrative:-The first time out for Biffo and young Chris Oakes. 120
miles of a good mixture of whites and tarmac. After about 1 mile
the Biffo special decided it wanted to to have a misfire( oh dear|)
obviously a remnant of mongolyod borrowing it on the Telford
Novice. The next thing to go wrong a front puncture (++**!!??) a
new yoko split (+**=??) then the battery cable parted company
from the battery, What a complete nightmare!!!!
Twenty years of road rallying and I have never had so many
problems, talk about curse of the “ Mowg” We decided to cut to
petrol and regroup we finish. the rest of the event with no other
problems apart from only having 2 BHP at the wheels 1 more
than normal
According to the Gimp A joy to have a navigator who calls the
road instead of spewing on you obviously we would of won with
out the problems.
Position finished :...OTL .
As usual Frank Burton Twirler & Christopher Oakes Navigator
VSCC Marches Batho Trophy Rally 4th
May 2009
The organiser of the Riley Register Rally phoned me the week before to say that one
of the entrants was without a navigator and would I step in. I hadn’t planned to do the
event and I had never met the driver before, but I am always one for a free ride.
I arrived at the start at Hadley Bowling Green, near Ombersley, in plenty of time but
my driver, Martin Collisson, was cutting it a bit fine. He arrived just six minutes before
we were due to collect our route card, plenty of time I hear you say. I rushed him through
scrutineering and signing on and we approached the route handout control just as they
were calling our number. Brinkmanship or what!
There were some very nice cars taking part, mostly Rileys with a smattering of others
e.g. a 1928 2 litre Lagonda, a 1939 Citroen and a 1929 Austin Chummy. We were in a
very smart 1935 Riley Lynx.
We had 15 minutes to plot the route which consisted of tulips, herringbones, grid
lines and map symbols, which wasn’t too difficult and we left the start with most of it on
the map. The route went west of Ombersley and wound its way around Wichenford and
Martley to a halfway halt at the Admiral Rodney where we had a nice lunch. There were
no penalties for early arrival so we clocked in at the halfway 8 minutes ahead of schedule.
Things seemed to be going quite well.
I spoke too soon and it all went a bit pear shaped in the second half. To begin with
there was no re-start marshall so several crews left early which was quite critical at the
finish. The time schedule was also increased from 17 mph to 20 mph. To prove you had
followed the correct way you had to answer questions along the route, and some of these
answers were difficult to see. We missed one in Leigh Sinton, quite how I don’t know as
it was on a board 3ft high and 8 ft wide! We retraced our steps but not far enough and
in the process dropped 11 minutes at the finish.
The event was run on a Touring Assembly permit and therefore I assumed that the
timing would only be used as a tie-decider. The organisers had different ideas. You were
given one mark for each correct answer and lost one mark for every minute late, which
was rather harsh and created an unfair imbalance in the final results. It would not have
been so bad if we had been told this in the regulations.
One crew who actually retired scored 6 marks and beat another crew who finished
and scored 21.5 marks but were 18 minutes late at the finish. This made the final
positions a bit of a lottery. Having said that we didn’t do particularly well anyway so it
was a bit academic as far as we were concerned. The finish was at the Elgar Centre near
Crown East. Good fun, shame about the results.
